Driving Digital Business Outcomes with GPU-Accelerated Storage: Nyriad's Spotlight Session at the Six Five Summit 2023

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at the Six Five Summit, Nyriad’s CEO, Derek Dicker was featured in a spotlight session entitled ‘Driving Digital Business Outcomes with GPU-Accelerated Storage,’ as part of the Cloud & Infrastructure track. The session was expertly moderated by Daniel Newman, CEO of the Futurum Group, adding further depth to the discussion.

The Six Five Summit is a 100% virtual, on-demand event designed to help technologists and business leaders stay up-to-date on the latest developments and trends in digital transformation produced by The Futurum Group and Moor Insights & Strategy.

Below are the key takeaways from Mr Dicker’s wide-ranging talk:

The Trendlines We See in the Market

An amazing set of secular trends motivated us to find a better way to store data including:

Data Growth Has Been the Most Important Driver of the Tech Economy and Continues Unabated

Data generation is increasing in pace and volumes, and is currently on the order of ~100 zettabytes. Research suggests these volumes will grow by a factor of 2 or 3 over time. Much of this data is in the enterprise, and a high ratio of it is unstructured. And, yes, a good chunk of it has to be stored.

Cloud Repatriation is Real, Leading to Growth of the Hybrid Cloud

In recent years, companies have moved away from cloud providers and are bringing their data in house.  We’ve found that companies are seeking additional information that can help them make intelligent choices when procuring storage systems that will deliver business outcomes that generate a positive ROI.

First, many workloads make more sense to run in the cloud, but many do not. High performance computing (HPC) applications, for example, need to transmit, process, and store vast amounts of data and those requirements would make the cloud an expensive proposition. Second, in this macro-economic environment when most businesses are searching for ways to  do more with less, there’s particular interest in exploring cloud-like, use-as-you-go payment options for on-premises infrastructure, which offers more control. These and other considerations are driving an expansion of the hybrid cloud.

RAID – a Decades Old Technology –  There’s Got to be a Better Way

Instead of using RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) as an underlying protection technology, Nyriad uses erasure coding.

Erasure coding affords us the ability to use large capacity drives in our systems as opposed to what’s used traditionally in on-premises systems, i.e., RAID-based technology.  RAID-based systems force customers to consider using smaller capacity drives because when a drive fails, the rebuild time has a correlation to how large that drive is typically.

One of the unique advantages of erasure coding, beyond the technological advantages – which Derek also discusses – is that it allows system administrators to configure when they want to service the system. Let the system administrators sleep at night! Say it with us:  #RAIDSucks

Nyriad’s Origin Story – How We Came to Develop GPU-Accelerated Storage

We looked at these trends and asked ourselves if there was a better way –  to offer a storage system that delivers consistent and high performance, resilience and efficiency while simplifying storage management, with a low total cost of ownership.  In this section, Derek shares with Daniel how our approach is driving innovation and leading to customer wins for Nyriad.

How Nyriad’s UltraIO Storage System Saves Power and Reduces Carbon Emissions

The Nyriad UltraIO storage solution, as noted earlier in the discussion,  is different and does not use RAID.  Instead, it uses the combined power of GPUs + CPUs to do erasure coding. The system uses larger, more economical and environmentally efficient drives. It can lose up to 20 drives (in a 204-drive system) with no data loss and less than 5% performance degradation. This provides better data protection without the need for additional drives that of RAID-based systems. UltraIO storage has much faster rebuild times, measured in hours versus RAID systems, which are measured in days or weeks.
